Industry 4.0 is the inclusion of automation and data exchange in industrial processes. It includes things like cyber-physical systems, cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The name represents the idea of these additions to industrial process to provoke the fourth revolution that has occurred in this context. From the first industrial revolution (mechanization through water and steam power) and the mass production and assembly lines using electricity in the second, to the third industrial revolution with the adoption of computers and automation. There are four design principles in Industry 4.0, which optimizes the computerization of Industry 3.0:

• Interconnection: Machines, devices, sensors, and people connecting and communicating with each other via the IoT.
• Information transparency: This transparency provides with vast amounts of useful information to make better decisions. Inter-connectivity allows to collect huge amounts of data from all points in an industrial process, thus identifying areas that can benefit from improvement.
• Technical assistance: Assistance systems supporting humans by aggregating and visualizing information comprehensively and cyber-physical systems physically supporting humans by performing tasks that are unpleasant, exhausting, or unsafe.
• Decentralized decisions: Cyber-physical systems making decisions on their own and conducting their tasks as autonomously as possible.

According to the Global Industry 4.0 Market & Technologies 2018-2023 report by HSRC, the Industry 4.0 market is projected to reach 214 billion dollars by 2023. A recent study from Fraunhofer IAO and BITKOM forecasts a productivity increase of around 78 billion euros until 2025 only in Germany. According to the market research report "Industry 4.0 Market by Technology, Vertical, Region - Global Forecast to 2022", the Industry 4.0 market was valued at 66.67 billion dollars in 2016 and is expected to reach 152.31 billion by 2022. These are just some examples that illustrate the huge importance and gigantic economic impact Industry 4.0 is forecast to cause.

However, the advent of Industry 4.0 is not free of challenges and risks, being the following some of the most cited ones:

• Risks to data security: The IoT services, data and people also opens up new avenues for data theft, industrial espionage and attacks by hackers.
• IT infrastructure: Industry 4.0 requires existing installations to be adapted and, in some cases, entirely new types of IT infrastructure. Diverse systems need to be networked and to learn to communicate with each other, and new communication networks may need to be developed from scratch.
• Lack of adequate skill-sets: Transitioning towards the fourth industrial revolution may require lots of multidisciplinary skills not all companies have among their employees.

A remote lab (RL) uses laboratory equipment which is connected to the Internet so that it can be operated at distance.

Experimentation plays an essential role in engineering and scientific education and research. Whereas hands-on labs offer students opportunities of experimentation with real systems, they involve high costs associated with equipment, space, and maintenance staff. Accordingly, RLs have been gaining importance during the last years. RLs provide other important benefits too:

• Availability: RLs can be used from anywhere at any time, thus they support users geographically scattered.
• Accessibility for handicapped people.
• Observability: lab sessions can be watched by many people or even recorded.
• Safety: RLs can be a better alternative to hands-on labs for dangerous experiments.

Different empirical studies have shown that RLs enable learning results comparable to traditional hands-on labs. Furthermore, many academics think that RLs provide interesting advantages over hands-on labs. For example, RLs can be available 24 h a day, 7 days a week. In contrast, hands-on labs are often only available for short periods of time due to logistical and economic reasons. Forming and understanding scientific concepts is the result of an iterative learning process that requires experimenting repeatedly with the lab. For that reason, hand-on labs are sometimes insufficient to fulfill the desired impact on students' learning.

Remote and hands-on labs are not exclusive alternatives, but valuable educational resources that can be combined in one integral and complementary learning unit. Academics have proposed the blended usage of and remote labs and hands-on labs to foster Kolb's constructivist cycle, and thus, enabling high order learning. In particular, they advocate (i) utilizing hands-on labs in interactive lectures that involve experimentation, and (ii) using remote labs to support students' repetitive experimentation.

Nowadays, the use of RLs is spreading across all educational levels: from primary schools to universities, and from self-education to technical colleges. Likewise, their application domain is widening: control engineering, robotics, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, optics, mechanics, etc. However, RLs have not reached yet a degree of sophistication enough for them to be massively developed and routinely deployed, which is why they are found in few occasions and mostly as pilot programs.

A smart home is a residence that uses internet-connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems, such as lighting, climate, or entertainment.

A home automation system typically connects controlled devices to a central hub. The user interface to control the system may be through wall-mounted terminals, tablets, a mobile phone app, a voice assistant, or a Web interface, that may also be accessible off-site through the Internet. Some of its applications are:

• Heating, ventilation and air conditioning: remote control of all home energy, monitored over the internet through a single and friendly user interface.
• Occupancy-aware control system: sensing the occupancy of the home using smart meters and environmental sensors integrated into the building to trigger automatic responses (in terms or lighting, heating, etc.) for energy efficiency and better comfort.
• Smart kitchen and connected cooking: using voice control devices or mobile applications to manage coffee machines, ovens, fridges or robotic kitchens.
• Appliance control and integration with the smart grid and a smart meter: for example, take advantage of solar panels output during the day to run washing machines and load batteries either for night use or for electric vehicles.

A report published by Orbis Research in 2017 valued the global smart homes market at 35.7 billion dollars in 2017 and expected it to reach a value of 150.6 billion dollars by 2023. The 2018 "Smart Home Market by Product, Software & Services, and Region - Global Forecast to 2024" report estimates that this market will to grow from 76.6 billion dollars in 2018 to 151.4 billion dollars by 2024.

Nevertheless, smart homes technology also poses several security issues that need to be addressed before the general public can massively adopt it blithely. Smart devices in homes gather multitude of highly sensitive private data via their sensors, and tech firms are taking advantage over having their smart devices in consumers homes and recording non-relevant data and information on the individuals.

The UK "Which?" magazine published an investigation in which they tried nineteen different products to test a wide range of device types. One example was an electric toothbrush, which in order to work for the first time, it previously required the user's location and asks to record audio. A second example was a smart tv which, after 15 minutes of use, it connected with 700 unique IP addresses, a very suspicious behavior. Moreover, the devices were sending information to twenty operators in total behind the scenes, including marketing companies. This confirms what we all fear about what is done with our data.
